This seminary course that’s open to Grace Equip students surveys congregational singing in Jewish and Christian liturgy from ancient history to the present. We’ll examine group singing in both Testaments, its commands, and its role in scripture. We’ll discuss musical forms and their use in worship practices, assessing congregational singing from the early church to contemporary times. We’ll review current practices and consider constructing a service with a focus on congregational singing. We’ll also discuss music’s relationship to emotions and its reflection of theology of worship. Finally, we’ll design service orders demonstrating a thoughtful liturgy of congregational singing.
